It’s been a while since our last visit to the Butcher’s Wife, a natural wine bar and kitchen nestled in a cozy corner of Tiong Bahru’s Yong Siak Street. This time, we had their newest lunch set (The Wife’s Feast), a prix fixe menu showing a smorgasbord of contrasting sensations. The food is yummy and filled with goodness, you probably would not notice that it is gluten-free if we hadn’t mentioned it.
If you’re as peckish as we were, you can try the Cassava Fries ($12) whilst waiting for the Wife’s Feast to be served. The Cassava Fries are fluffier than usual french fries and the tangy kimchi tartar sauce prepares you for the feast ahead.
We also tried the pao de queijo ($12), a cheese pao that has a mochi-like texture and is served with a tomato & chili sauce.
The Wife’s Feast! We were wondering where to begin.
The staff suggested that we start with the Wagyu Churrasco, a beef skewer sandwiched between the romaine lettuce leaf, fermented mustard seed, julienned carrots and cucumber. This refreshing and healthy taco-like bite sets the tone for the meal.
After we had the Prawn Vatapa and the winged bean salad, we moved on to this Grilled Chicken Wings. They have the quintessential barbecue taste and have been deboned so you can easily eat them with a side of fermented papaya slaw.
My favorite is the Vegetable Moqueca, a Brazilian stew of banana blossom, pumpkin, mushroom and tau kwa. I hope that the Butcher’s Wife eventually includes this on their ala carte menu too, so that it is available for dinner and on weekends.
The Vegetable moqueca complements the garlic brown rice. Just look at how the rice grain glistens. The vegetable stew reminds us a little of a non-spicy curry with its creamy texture.
The meal ends with the Mousse de Maracuja, a passion fruit mousse served with mango-kaffir lime sorbet. Expect tangy bright flavours, apt for this summery weather.
If you prefer sweeter desserts to round things up, the chocolate & caramel lava cake is one of the popular items on the Butcher’s Wife’s menu. Look at the generous amount of chocolate encased within the cake!
The Butcher’s Wife is also well-stocked with a wide selection of natural wines from the Drunken Farmer and if you’re having the Wife’s Feast, you can choose to add on a glass of natural wine at $12++.
Budget per person: $38 per pax (min 2 to dine)
